When placed in a sealed box, bag, container, or cabinet, the color of the A–D strips changes in the presence of acidic vapors emitted by the decomposing film, indicating the degree of acidity.
The change in the indicator’s color indicates the severity of the decomposition. The required observation time depends on the temperature. At 20 °C, the test can be completed in 24 hours. At colder temperatures, keep the strip near the test object for 2–3 days. After the test, compare it with the included control strip. If the strip turns olive green (pH 4.6), the critical autocatalytic point has been reached, at which point the item must be isolated from the rest of the collection (and a copy must be made of it). Safety gloves and adequate ventilation are recommended.
